W10 update culprit?
Published on September 22, 2016 By Badstone In DeskScapes

Since the big W10 annual 'gift' update I cannot display different images on my 3 monitors. This was a rare occasional problem before, however a new build and install made it mostly go away. Now when I click apply to Monitor 2 Nothing happens. Nothing.

Any ideas? Anyone else have this error?

Same here. Fully updated codec pack too.

Windows 10 Anniversary Edition.

I also just noticed that W10 switched my monitors: used to be 3-2-1 now is 2-3-1, and nVidia desktop also switched itself to the new config.

So maybe Deskscapes is seeing the old way and not the new way/order! Ha - new world order according to M$!

ALSO noticed that W10 NOW thinks that my base monitor is #2!! Also, the taskbar icons on 1 are inoperative.

I think this is more a W10 issue, but Deskscape needs to rebuild to function in this new OS!

Also my login screens were changed, and W10 ADDED a screensaver "Windows 10" without asking! M$ bullies are screwing with this program.

What is your Build and Version?  Are you using an insider build?

[The easiest way to find your version is to open the Run window (Win+r) and type "winver" (without the quotes)]

on Sep 23, 2016

nope, just an off the shelf version 1607 os build 14393.187 W10 pro.

nVidia 970 and 2 hdmi and 1 DVI 1680x1050 monitors on a AMD Phenom II 8 core with 20 GB RAM, tons of storage.

NOW even worse; I swapped video ports and reset some W10 settings to basics, rebooted. Now DeskScapes has Zero control. It cannot even set all to 1 picture or even any to any picture. It's totally defunct...

I've notified the dev team.
I'll grab another monitor and spin up the build you have so see if I can reproduce the issue.

Thanks! This is the version I installed, I have uninstalled it for now.

If I apply the same dream to both monitors it loads on one, runs a few seconds, then the other loads, they both lock up, then DeskScapes crashes out. Same thing if I try a different dream on each screen.

This echoes some of the problems I have had with Windows 10 x64, 3 monitors, and Deskscapes 8.  I reported these issues last year and earlier this year in this forum and via support.

I suspect that it is related to the monitor numbering/matching discrepancy or whatever underlies that change in the OS.  For me, video wallpapers work just fine on all monitors, but Dynamic Dreams like PhotoDream will ONLY work if they are located on the leftmost monitor (of the 3) AND that monitor is set at the Primary/Main Display...no matter what "number ID" Windows/Deskscapes assigns to it.

I have juggled monitors (all 30" Dells at 2560x1600, see below), positions, which is primary (left, middle, or right), connections (DVI vs DP), and GPUs (old 295/280, Quadro, GTX 970), with all delivering the same results as described above.

Note that this is clearly an OS vs. Deskscapes issue as I can use whatever monitor I want on the same machine/hardware under a secondary boot partition running W7 x64 and have no problems with whatever Dreams I choose to run in whatever position with whatever monitor selected as Primary/Main.

The good news is that, with this one restriction, Deskscapes runs far smoother on this tri-monitor setup under W10 than it does under W7.  There is no comparison.  W10 is superior in every way, except for this odd bug.

Now for the REAL fun...here is how each "application" reports the monitor order, Left to Right, with the Primary/Main Display being the leftmost monitor on a 970.

MS OS 10 via "Display options" - 2 1 3

NVidia Control Panel -  3 2 1 as connected in "Change Resolution" but 2 1 3 as reported in "Set up Multiple Displays"

Deskscapes 8 Configuration Tool - 1 3 2

Note that the Nvidia control panel and the OS would NOT match up on Windows 10 before this Anniversary Update (but they do now), so that does seem to be a change (probably at the OS level) in this regard.  That may be why I was the only person with this problem before the Update and others are reporting it now?

For completeness, though it seems to make no difference how I connected the monitors or in what order in regards to this odd bug, these are the monitors:

Left Monitor is Dell 3008 connected via DVI

Middle Monitor is Dell 3011 connected via DP

Right Monitor is Dell 3007 connected via DVI (also has DP option, makes no difference to behavior)

Minor Update: I rebooted into Windows 7 x64 on the same system and the Monitor order reported on Windows 10 for both the OS and Nvidia "Setup Multiple Displays" match those reported by the OS and Nvidia "Setup Multiple Displays" under W7 (re: 2 1 3), so it appears that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update corrected this discrepancy in the Windows 10 release and November update.

However, the Nvidia control panel entry "Change resolution" lists the monitors in a different order under W7 than W10.  Above, in W10, it was 3 2 1 whereas in W7 it's 1 2 3.

And I can still enable Photodream on any monitor regardless of which monitor is the Primary/Main.

I don't know if this helps narrow the focus, or continues a wild goose chase, but I thought I'd at least check and mention it now that this bug is affecting more than just me.

Update:

Today I re-installed DeskScapes.

W10 has once again changed its mind about my monitors w-10 = 1-3-2 (nVidia agrees) and DS says 321.

I was able to select and apply a wallpaper to each monitor.

I'll monitor it to see if it changes and report back.

It definitely worked before the major W10 update; definitely stopped after the update.

Hope that it doesn't happen again and you can find the cause. Let's hope it works.

Afterthought:

When 3 monitors with different images all suddenly had the same image, I started this post. There were good responses, and thanks for the interest.

So far a clean reinstall is working well.

Here's something that I may have done that was not reported before:

I may have moved/deleted a 'registered' folder with DS. I think I had a test folder of videos to try and wanted to make some changes in them and moved them after trying them out.

I did not have them active, but they had all been applied to a monitor and viewed before moving them later.

I noticed today that an image I had applied an effect to was still showing the effect when I viewed it, and that made me think about how DS saves its data.

So could a folder which had been previously used, but not currently active, when removed, cause the individual monitor settings to change?

Just a thought, thanks again!
